Red Pandas Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Red Pandas Are Very Good Climbers

Red Pandas live in the Eastern Himalayas in very dense forests, this means they spend a lot of their time around or in trees. Because of the nature of their habitat red pandas have evolved to be very good climbers. They climb trees to avoid predators, to sleep, or even to sunbathe. The low energy diet of the red panda means they aren’t very active and they spend a lot of time sleeping.

They climb up trees using their very sharp claws and can walk along branches using their tail for balance. Red Pandas have strong claws and flexible wrists that mean they can climb down a tree while facing the ground.

Red Pandas Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Red Pandas Have a Sweet Tooth

Red Pandas just like Giant Panda love eating bamboo even if it doesn’t provide them with a lot of energy. There are around 40 species of bamboo that grow in thickets in the habitat of the red panda. Red Pandas don’t just eat bamboo though, they also enjoy sweet treats such as fruit they find in the forest.

The reason for the Red Panda’s sweet tooth is that they have a tongue which can taste sweetness in food, which most animals don’t have. Red Pandas are the only non-primate animals which can taste the sweetness of foods.

Red Pandas Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: They Use Their Tail as a Blanket

The Eastern Himalayas can be cold and wet in winter which means the Red Pandas have to be able to keep warm where they live in the forest. Red Pandas have a soft undercoat of fur and then a coat of coarse hairs on top, this helps keep them warm.

Their tail is covered in a long and fluffy coat which they can wrap around them as a blanket keeping them extra cosy in cold weather. Just like an extra soft scarf.

Red Pandas Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: They Have Stripes Under Their Eyes to Help Them See

Red Pandas have distinctive markings under their eyes, they are stripes which travel from under their eyes to their chin. These markings look very nice but they also play an important job in how the red panda can see in any weather.

In the summer the weather is very sunny in the Red Pandas habitat. These darker stripes under their eyes help the panda see as the light doesn’t bounce off the stripes and into their eyes like it would if their face was all white.

Red Pandas Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: Red Pandas Have a Kind of Thumb

Red Pandas aren’t closely related to the Giant panda but they do have some similarities with them. They both love bamboo and they both use their thumbs to help them eat it. The Red Panda had a bone connected to their wrist which helps them grab onto things, like bamboo, their favourite food.
