Have you ever seen a hedgehog before and wondered how their life looks like? Here are five brilliant facts about hedgehogs for kids.
Can you guess how many quills – or spikes! – each hedgehog has? They have between 5,000 and 7,000, and every year each one falls out and is replaced by a new one!
Who do you think would win in a fight? A cute little hedgehog or a snake? Well, I bet your answer would change if you knew that hedgehogs are immune to most snake venoms! So actually the hedgehog usually wins!
Can you guess where their names come from? It’s pretty simple, they love to live in “Hedges” and they make little grunting noises just like pigs – or “Hogs!” But do you know what they used to be called? Urchins! After sea urchins!
Did you know that there’s not just one kind of hedgehog? There is only one kind in the UK, but there are another fourteen species of hedgehogs that live all over the world, mostly in Europe!
If you are a gardener then you will love having hedgehogs in your garden! Hedgehogs love berries and fruit but they also eat mostly the pests that live in our gardens and eat our plants like beetles and caterpillars! So maybe you could build a hedgehog house and put it in the bottom of your garden, so they can help out!
