Turtles are some of the oldest animals on Earth! Did you know that turtles were around more than 100 million years ago and used to roam the planet alongside the dinosaurs!

Turtles are soft and hard, their shells are actually bones that they wear on the outside, they don’t have teeth – instead they have beaks made of the same stuff out fingernails are made of BUT so that they stay nice and light their bones are actually spongy and light!

Turtles Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: The Biggest One Ever Found

The biggest sea turtle ever found was found in WALES! In 1988 a turtle was found ashore two and a half metres from tip to tip of its flippers, and it weighed 140 stone!

Turtles Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Baby Turtles

Turtles lay their soft eggs in the sand, dirt, or in grass. They dig holes and deposit the eggs. Some of these terrific animals lay only a few eggs. Some can lay over 1,000 at one time. Once the eggs are laid, the turtles move on, leaving the babies to fend for themselves.

Some turtles are carnivores (meat eaters), others are herbivores (plant eaters) and some are omnivores (a mixture of the two!). Many baby turtles start life as carnivores but grow to eat more plants as they mature.
