Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus was the Son of God, sent down to earth to save people by dying on the cross. Christians believe they can learn what God is like through Jesus Christ’s teachings.

If a person wants to join the Christian church and become a Christian they must be baptised. This usually happens shortly after a child is born and the ceremony is known as a Christening.

Christianity Facts for kids Fact Number 2: Christianity Is The World’s Largest Religion

Today there are about 2.2 billion Christians in the world. That’s almost a third of the world’s population. Christianity began 2,000 years ago in the Middle East and ever since its following has grown. The Pope is seen as the spiritual head of Christians all over the world.

He is believed by Catholics to be the successor of St Peter, who was one of Jesus’ apostles. The word Christ comes from a Greek word meaning Messiah. The Messiah is God’s chosen one. Christians also believe in the Trinity.

The Trinity is the idea that three figures are united in one God: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is thought of as a helper sent to guide and teach humans.

The bible is a holy text  for Christians .The Christian Bible contains two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains the same books as the Jewish Bible and was written before Jesus’s birth.

The New Testament contains the teachings of Jesus. The Bible contains lots of stories called parables. These are stories that Jesus told to teach people about God’s love for them. The Bible was also the first book to ever be printed.

Christianity Facts for kids Fact Number 4: The Church Is a Place of Worship for Christians

Sunday is a day when most Christians meet to worship God, typically in a church. Churches can be any size and can be found all over the world. Church services include prayers, hymns and readings from the Bible.

During the service in church, a minister, priest or vicar will read from the Bible. They will also talk about Jesus’s teachings, this is called a sermon.

A service called communion or eucharist is also done in a church and it is when bread and wine are shared together. Christians say “Amen” at the end of many prayers. Amen means ‘let it be so’.

Christianity Facts for kids Fact Number 5: Christians Have Two Main Holidays

Two of the most important days of the year for Christians are Christmas and Easter. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Many traditions are tied to the festive holiday, such as decorating a Christmas tree and exchanging gifts.

Easter is the holiest day of the year for Christians. It celebrates their belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is when he rose from the dead. Lent is a fasting season that Christians take part in for 40 days before Easter to remember Jesus’s 40 days and nights in the desert.
