Have you ever wondered how to help with the climate change? Here are five fascinating climate change facts for kids.

Climate Change Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Greenhouse Gases

Climate change is the process of the Earth heating up because of damage that is done to the environment. The Earth is heating up because of a large amount of gases in the atmosphere that trap heat. These gases are called greenhouse gases because they make the Earth trap heat the way a greenhouse does. The two main greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are carbon dioxide and methane and they are released in many different ways.

Climate Change Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Deforestation

Trees are amazing for the environment because they breathe in carbon dioxide and store it or turn it into oxygen, which we need to breathe. Deforestation happens for many reasons including making paper and making way for buildings. When all these trees are cut down it means a lot less absorption of carbon dioxide and it releases the carbon stored in the trees back into the atmosphere.

Climate Change Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: Coral on The Seafloor

The ocean plays an important role in the environment as it absorbs heat and distributes it around the planet. The increase of heat in the atmosphere is bad for the ocean because it heats it up more than the ocean can deal with. If the water of the ocean is too warm it can affect plants and coral on the seafloor. These plants are very helpful to the planet because they absorb carbon dioxide.

Climate Change Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Single Use Plastic

When you buy a bottle of water or juice, or buy fruit or veg wrapped in thin plastic you are using a single use plastic. These plastics are only used once but will stay in the environment for 500 years. These plastics can end up in the ocean where it can hurt animals or can end up in landfill where they release chemicals into the environment. By using refillable bottles, using reusable bags, and buying unwrapped fruit and vegetables we can reduce the single use plastics which harm the planet.

Climate Change Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: What Can We Do to Help The Environment?

When you are at home you can still help reduce your impact on the planet and help prevent climate change’s effects. When you leave a room, make sure to turn off lights and switches. When you see a dripping tap reduce water waste by turning it off fully. When you throw something away make sure it is in the recycling bin if it can be recycled. And try planting wildflowers which are good for pollinators in your garden to help the creatures that help the planet. These are just a few simple things you can do to help the planet!

We hope you enjoyed learning more things about climate change as much as we loved teaching you about it.
