World War Two Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: The World’s First Computer was Created to Break Nazi Codes

One of our favourite World War Two facts for kids:
Computers now are very small and very smart but the first computer ever made was created to do just one thing. It was created to break a German spy code called the Enigma code. German spies and commanders used this code to communicate and breaking it was very important.

This code could not be cracked by humans so a brilliant mathematician called Alan Turing created a machine that could do lots of maths all at once to break the code before it was changed. This machine shortened the war by between two and four years, saving millions of lives.

World War Two Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: British People Fundraised Money to Make One of The Best Planes in The War

The Spitfire is one of the best known fighter planes in history and it was very helpful in Britain’s war efforts. A new and highly effective war plane was very expensive to make and so the British people tried their best to help out. People were encouraged to give what ever they could and could even pay for specific parts of the plane. A single rivet to help attach parts of the plane together would cost 6 pennies.

Many people donated some of their wages, some people went without treats and donated that money instead. One boy who was 7 years old called Fred gave his pocket money to the Spitfire fund.

World War Two Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Americans Changed The Name of Hamburgers During World War 2

The hamburger is named after the German city of Hamburg where the idea of a minced beef sandwich originated. Because the Americans were fighting against Germany they did not want one of their staple foods named after a German city. They renamed hamburgers ‘liberty steaks’ for the duration of the war.

World War Two Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: Victory Gardens Were Set Up to Grow Vegetables During Rationing

Rationing was a system of reducing how much people could buy to prevent running out of resources during war time. In Britain people were given books which listed how much they bought of rationed foods and how much more they could buy that week or month. One way people got more food during rationing was to grow their own.

Posters from both the British and American governments encouraged their citizens to grow their own vegetables in patches called ‘Victory Gardens’. These gardens were a great source of food and reduced the pressure on the government during wartime.
