Roald Dahl is known all over the world for his fantastic books but when he was in school his teacher’s didn’t think he was very good at writing. He continued to write through his whole life, he even wrote for four hours every day. When he had his own children he started writing children’s books and now he is the author of some of the best children’s books in the world. His books Include: The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and James and the Giant Peach.
Roald Dahl wrote every day in the morning and in the afternoon and most of his work was done in his writer’s shed. He had a comfortable armchair where he could think up his interesting book ideas. He always wrote in yellow page notebooks with HB pencils as even though he wrote almost 50 books in his life he never learned to type. He preferred to write using pencil and paper.
Roald Dahl was in the British Royal Air Force from 1939 to 1946, and during his time in the RAF he was even involved in a plane crash. His time flying RAF planes inspired his first children’s novel called The Gremlins. The Gremlins is a story about naughty gremlins which interfere with planes by affecting their electrics and the main character is a pilot. While he was in the Air Force he was given the nickname ‘Lofty’, this is because he was 6 feet 6 inches tall, what a big friendly giant.
One of Roald Dahl’s favourite things was chocolate which inspired his novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His writing shed had a collection of chocolate wrappers left in it and he had planned to write a history of chocolate at some point during his writing career. While he was studying at Repton School in Derbyshire he got to have his childhood dream job. He got to be a taste tester for a chocolate company that was based near his school. The students in Repton would try new types of chocolate and write down what they thought about them. What a cool job.
Roald Dahl day is celebrated on the 13th of September which is Roald Dahl’s birthday. Schools and libraries have special events that celebrate the life and work of Roald Dahl. When it’s Roald Dahl day you can celebrate by reading some of his books, learning more about him and his life, throwing a Roald Dahl themed party or watching one of the films based on his stories.
