Before becoming president Barack Obama studied for a degree in political science and then got his degree in Law. He was the first African American to become the president of the Harvard Law Review, a highly respected journal about law.

He worked as a civil rights lawyer and a state senator in Illinois. All of his learning and career led to his 2009 election as the first African American president of the United States.

Barack Obama Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Barack Obama Was Born in Hawaii

In 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States of America. Barack Obama was born two years later in 1961, he is the only US president so far that was born after Hawaii became one of the United States. When Obama was 6 years old he lived in Indonesia for 4 years with his mother and step-father. He then returned to Hawaii to continue his education.

The American presidency is voted on by its people every four years, being president for those four years is called a term. In America one person can only run for president twice meaning if they win both elections they are president for two terms. Obama was able to win both of the elections he ran in meaning he was the president of America for 8 years.

The term system in American government dates back to George Washington who decided to retire rather than remaining president until his death. He did this to make sure America was not like the royal systems of rule in Britain and Europe.

Barack Obama Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Barack Obama Doesn’t Enjoy Ice Cream

A funny fact about Obama is that he doesn’t like ice cream. When Barack Obama was a teenager he worked at an ice cream shop, serving ice cream all day and it meant that he no longer liked ice cream. One of Obama’s favourite drinks is a black forest berry iced tea which he can enjoy on hot summer days instead of ice cream.

Running for president is a very busy job and so when Barack Obama was working hard to become president he promised his daughters a present if he won. Barack Obama’s daughters Malia and Sasha were 7 years old and 10 years old when Obama was running for president and he promised they could have a puppy if he won the presidency.

When Obama won he got them a cute  Portuguese Water Dog who they called ‘Bo’, the Obama’s now have another Portuguese Water Dog called ‘Sunny’.
