There are seven types of renewable energy that help us save our planet from climate change. Let’s learn five exquisite renewable energy facts for kids.
Renewable energy is energy that comes from sources that won’t run out. Fossil Fuels will eventually run out and they cause damage to the environment. Renewable energy sources are much better for the environment. There are 7 types of renewable energy including:
Solar energy, which is created by storing the heat and light from the sun. Wind energy, which creates electricity by using the wind to turn turbines. Hydroelectric energy, which creates energy by using tides and water to power underwater turbines. And Geothermal energy which uses steam from hot water from under the ground to turn a turbine which creates electricity.
When we use fossil fuels to create energy they are burned and release chemicals such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere it traps heat and increases the global temperature. This is because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.
Tides in the ocean move in and out everyday because of the gravitational pull of the moon. We can get energy from the tides by using underwater turbines which are powered by the tide going in or out. Tidal energy is the most predictable form of renewable energy because the tides always happen twice a day. Solar energy or wind energy are less predictable because it is sometimes not sunny or windy. Tides are always there and if we monitor the tides in an area we can know how much energy it will produce every day.
In Iceland they use both hydropower and geothermal energy. Iceland has lots of hot springs which are great at producing geothermal energy. Hydropower makes over 70% of the energy used by Iceland because they have a large amount of glacial rivers. Iceland is a great example to show us that we can swap to renewable energies that best suit our climate.
The Ancient Romans loved baths but they didn’t have hot water boilers like we have now. So, how did they enjoy hot baths? They used hot springs from under the earth’s surface to make sure they could have heated baths whenever they wanted. The Ancient Romans believed that bathing was very important to your health and that mineral baths in hot springs were spiritually important.
They even used pipes through the walls and floors of their house filled with hot water from the hot springs to heat their homes. That system works the same way that radiators do to heat our homes today. What a clever idea!
