The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of brick, stone, tamped earth, and wood that was built along the northern borders of China. It was constructed over centuries to protect the Chinese states and empires from raids and invasions by various nomadic groups from the Eurasian Steppe. It is the longest wall in the world, stretching over 13,000 miles.
The Great Wall of China is so long and substantial that it can be seen from space with the naked eye. It is one of the few man-made structures visible from low Earth orbit. The wall is around 30 feet tall and 30 feet wide, making it quite a feat of engineering.
The Great Wall of China was built with a variety of materials depending on what was available in the area and the time period in which it was constructed. The majority of the wall is made of brick or tamped earth, but some sections are made of stone or wood. The materials used were sourced from the nearby regions, the brick was made from the clay, stone was quarried and the tamped earth was made from the soil found in the area.
The Great Wall of China was constructed over many centuries by different Chinese dynasties, so different sections of the wall have different architectural styles and levels of preservation. Some sections are well-preserved and open to tourists, while others are in disrepair. The wall was built in different phases, starting from the 7th century BC and the last section was built in the 17th century AD.
Visitors can walk or hike along some sections of the Great Wall of China and enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Some popular sections for tourists include the Badaling section in Beijing and the Jinshanling-Simatai section in Hebei province. These sections are well-preserved and offer great views, also have facilities like restrooms, food courts and souvenir shops. Some of the less-visited sections are considered to be more challenging to hike and offer a more rugged experience.
