The Super Bowl is the single most popular sporting event in the United States. More people watch the Super Bowl game each year than any other TV show. In 2011 the SuperBowl became the most watched television program in American history with 111 million viewers. This broke the 20 year record of the last episode of M*A*S*H.
Ever since then the SuperBowl has been breaking its own record. Out of the top 10 most watched American television programs of all time, nine of them are Super Bowls. As of 2022, the most watched SuperBowl of all time is the Super Bowl XLIX which was played between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. This game had an incredible 114.44 million viewers.
The halftime is a huge deal at the Super Bowl. Famous musicians such as Micahel Jackson, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Madonna and JLo and Shakira have all performed at the Super Bowl. The cost for placing a commercial in the Super Bowl is more expensive than any other television event. In 1967, when the first Super Bowl was first played, advertisements only cost around 75,000 for a one minute commercial. It costs over 6 million US dollars to have a 30 second ad during the SuperBowl. Can you imagine what you could buy with that money!
The Super Bowl is the National Football League’s championship game. It’s held every year in the United States. Roman numerals are used to name the Super Bowls, for example, Super Bowl XLIX, because the football season falls in two calendar years. The San Francisco 49ers were the first team to win 5 Super Bowls. What an achievement. The players on the winning team each get paid an extra 150,000 US dollars.
The Lombardi Trophy is given to the winning NFL Super Bowl team every year. The trophy weighs seven pounds and it is 21 inches in height. The trophy is a sterling silver football sitting on a three-sided kicking tee. It was designed by former Tiffany & Co. vice president Oscar Riedner. This prestigious trophy is worth 25,000 US dollars. The trophy is named after the NFL coach Vince Lombardi. He coached the Green Bay Packers, who went on to win the first ever Super Bowl in 1967.
