Peacocks are actually only the males of the species, they use their colourful feathers to attract the females – that are actually called peahens!

It takes Peacocks three whole years to develop the feathers they need in order to find a mate, the better the colours and the bigger the tail is the best way for a peahen to decide which peacocks are strongest and best to have offspring with.

Peacocks have been respected in many different cultures, for example they are the national bird of India, and the animal that represents Hera, the Queen of the Greek Gods.
