Circulatory System Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: The Circulatory System Is around 60,000 Miles Long

The circulatory system travels to every part of your body providing it with blood, oxygen, and nutrients. This system is mostly made up of veins and arteries which are very long. If you laid them all out they would stretch over 60,000 miles. That is so long that they could wrap around the world 2 and a half times. It is a massive system of tubes that contains around 5 litres of blood.

Circulatory System Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Ancient Egyptians Believed that The Heart Controlled The Body

When people died in Ancient Egypt they would be mummified to keep their body for the afterlife. Some internal organs, including the brain, were removed but the heart stayed in the body. This is because they believed the heart controlled the body and held the life-essence or soul of each person. The Ancient Egyptians believed you would need to keep your heart to live happily in the afterlife. It wasn’t until a Greek physician called Galen conducted some experiments that we found out the brain was what controlled the body.

Circulatory System Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: Blushing Happens When Blood Vessels Expand

If you get embarrassed, cold, or tired out while exercising you may find your cheeks turning red. There are a few different reasons for blushing but they are all to do with the blood vessels that carry blood around your body. When you are embarrassed your body thinks it is an emergency and sends more blood to your muscles, meaning they go red. This is why you blush because there is more blood in the muscles of your face.

Circulatory System Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Blood Flows very Quickly

Blood first flows from the heart to the lungs, which is a short trip which gives the red blood cells oxygen to carry around the body. Then the heart pumps the blood around the rest of the body. The blood only takes around 20 seconds to flow around the entire body and the heart pumps blood around all the time. The heart is always beating and it beats around 60 to 100 times every minute. That’s hard work!

Circulatory System Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: The Heart Beats Because of Electricity in Your Body

There is a node at the top of your heart which creates its own electricity which makes the heart beat. The electricity makes the heart’s muscle contract and then lets it go back to normal, this movement pumps blood all around the circulatory system. This is why its important to be careful around electricity because electric shocks can affect the electricity in your heart. People only started using electricity to make power in 1752 but our bodies have been doing it all along. How clever!
