The brain is made up of around 60% fat which stores all the important parts of the brain. This is why it is important to have fatty acids and good fats in your diet. This is why fat is an important part of the food pyramid even if we should eat fat in moderation. Having good fats in our diet helps our brain stay healthy and function the best it can.

Brain Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: The Cerebellum Works Hard to Make Sure We Don’t Fall Over

The cerebellum is a piece of the brain at the back of our head which connects to the spinal cord. This part of the brain keeps track of gravity and the way our body moves. If we need to adjust how we stand to keep our balance the cerebellum will tell our body to do it before we even know it. The cerebellum works all the time to make sure we can balance while standing up.

Brain Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: The Brain Takes in Information From All The Sense Organs

Our sense organs help us understand the world around us, our eyes see, our ears hear, and our nose smells. These sense organs don’t actually do the whole job as they couldn’t see, hear, or smell without the brain taking in information. When the nose detects a scent in the air it sends information to the brain and the brain identifies what the smell is. When the eyes take in the world around us, they see everything upside down so the brain has to flip it so we can see properly. When the eardrum vibrates with sound waves, the brain makes sense of them so we can hear.

Brain Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Sleep Is Very Important to The Brain

The brain works hard all the time to keep your body running and healthy, the brain is even working while you sleep. The brain takes the time while you are asleep to organise all the thoughts and actions which happened during the day. The brain also flushes out toxins which can hurt the brain if they build up while you sleep. Which is why getting a good nights sleep is so important.

Dreams are also very important even if they seem weird or silly sometimes. Dreams allow our brain to process what has happened during the day and the emotions we have. That is why we sometimes have nightmares if we are stressed.
