Do you want to travel to space one day? So let’s learn five unbelievable facts about the Universe.

The Universe Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: The Universe Is Flat

It is said that the universe expands in every direction without curving, therefore making it flat. For years, people speculated whether or not the Earth was flat and thanks to space exploration we know that the Earth is round. The universe has neither a positive curvature or negative curvature, meaning it has zero curvature causing it to be flat.

The Universe Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: It Is 13.7 Billion Years Old

It’s hard to imagine how old the Earth is and it is roughly 4.5 billion years old. So, trying to get your head around how old the Universe is can be difficult especially when it is over 3 times as old as the Earth. Astronomers estimate the age of the universe by studying the oldest stars and objects in it.

The Universe Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: There Are More Stars In The Universe Than Grains of Sand on Earth.

There are over 200 billion trillion stars in the universe. As a number that is written as 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.- 2 with 23 zeros after it. That’s a lot of stars in the Universe. We can only see about 5,000 of the stars in the Universe from planet Earth and that is why it is so hard for us to imagine that there are billions of trillions of them. Some of the stars we see are actually from thousands or even millions of years ago.

The Universe Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: The Universe Has No Centre

Ever since the Big Band the Universe has been constantly getting bigger and bigger every second and for that reason there will never be a centre. The Big Bang is how the Universe began and it is the idea that the universe began at just a single point and it then expanded and stretched to grow to its current size, which is continuously stretching.

The Universe Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: There Is No Sound in The Universe

The Universe is a vacuum, meaning it is an empty space with no air. Sound travels through the vibrations of particles and because there is no air in the Universe, sound has nowhere to travel through. Although some sounds have been heard in space, it is nowhere near how we experience sound on Earth.
