Medusa Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Gorgon Sisters

Medusa was a mythical creature from Greek mythology, she was a monster with snakes for hair and could turn people to stone with her gaze. She was one of three Gorgon sisters, the other two being Stheno and Euryale. They were daughters of the sea gods, Phorcys and Ceto.

Medusa Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Punishment

Medusa used to be a beautiful woman, but she was punished by the goddess Athena, after she was raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple. Athena punished Medusa by turning her into a monster with snakes for hair and a gaze that could turn people to stone.

Medusa Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: Cave

Medusa lived in a cave and was considered to be very dangerous, people were afraid to go near her. She was said to have lived on an island and was protected by other monsters, making it even more difficult to defeat her.

Medusa Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: The Hero Perseus

The hero Perseus was able to defeat Medusa by using a shield given to him by Athena, to avoid looking at her directly, and then cutting off her head with a sword given to him by Hermes. He also used the reflection of the shield to locate Medusa’s position and strike her with the sword.

Medusa Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: Pegasus

After Medusa was killed, Pegasus, a winged horse, was born from her blood. Pegasus was a powerful and majestic creature that became a companion to many heroes in Greek mythology, including Bellerophon who rode him into battle against the Chimera. Additionally, Medusa’s head was also a powerful weapon and was used by Perseus and later Athena to turn their enemies into stone.
