Java Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Java Was Invented by Accident

Java developer James Gosling was working at Sun Microsystems in the early 90’s and was given the task to clean up C++. During this process, Gosling and his team ended up creating a new programming language and runtime and so Java began. For this reason, the rules and syntax of Java are based on the C and C++ languages. Java’s mascot is called “The Duke” and the character was created by Joe Palrang, a computer animator who worked on Shrek and Flushed Away.

Java Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Java Wasn’t Always Known as Java

At the beginning Java was called Oak. James Gosling is said to have named it after a big oak tree that was outside his window. However, the name had to be changed when the lawyers in the company that Gosling was working for realised that there was already a computer company named Oak. And so the name that we are all so familiar with today was born.

Java is a worldwide known programming language with over 9 million Java developers in the world. It is known that being a Java developer pays a great salary. Working as a java developer is a tough job as often the projects and companies Java works with are quite high up. The wages reflect the expertise needed to complete these roles.

Java often comes out on top as a favourite programming language for developers and for this reason it is ranked second place in popularity amongst other programming languages. In first place is C . Java is a top favourite because it can easily move from one computer system to another and it is very versatile. Java is used in Android App development. Android is a mobile operating system that runs on smartphones and tablets. Android allows developers to write code using Java to manage the Android device. The Java programming language is used to develop Android applications. Most of the Android apps that you will see in the Play Store are built with Java. Other platforms that use Java are AirBnb and Uber.
