Rather than biting (they are non-venomous and harmless to humans), they may release a foul-smelling substance from glands near their tails. If this doesn’t deter a predator, they’ll perform an Oscar-winning death scene, flipping onto their back with mouth agape and tongue hanging out, remaining motionless until the danger passes.
They hibernate during the winter months, emerging in March or April when temperatures rise. Females lay eggs rather than giving birth to live young. They seek out warm, decomposing vegetation, such as compost heaps, to lay their leathery eggs, as the heat generated by decomposition incubates them naturally. The Adder: Understanding Britain’s Only Venomous Snake
The adder (Vipera berus) is the UK’s only venomous snake, a fact that often causes unnecessary fear. Understanding adders helps children learn that “venomous” doesn’t mean “dangerous to humans” when treated with respect.
Adders are smaller than grass snakes, rarely exceeding 75 centimetres in length. They’re easily identified by the distinctive dark zigzag pattern running along their backs, a V- or X-shaped marking on their heads, and red eyes with vertical pupils. Males are typically greyish-white with black markings, whilst females are usually brownish with darker brown markings.
These snakes prefer dry, open habitats such as heathland, moorland, woodland edges and coastal dunes. They feed on small mammals (particularly voles and mice), lizards, frogs, and occasionally ground-nesting birds. Adders are most active during spring when they emerge from hibernation to breed.
Adder venom is used to immobilise prey before swallowing it whole. For humans, adder bites are extremely rare and almost never life-threatening. The last recorded death from an adder bite in the UK occurred in 1975. Adders are shy creatures that will always try to escape rather than confront humans. Bites typically only occur when someone accidentally steps on an adder or tries to handle one.
Teaching children proper adder safety is straightforward: if you see an adder whilst walking in the countryside, simply stop, take a few steps back, and watch it from a safe distance. Allow the snake to move away on its own. Never attempt to touch, catch or harm an adder. These reptiles are protected by law in the UK, and disturbing them is illegal.
The Smooth Snake: Britain’s Rarest Reptile
The smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) is the UK’s rarest native reptile, found only in a few protected heathland areas in southern England, primarily in Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey. Many British people never see one in their lifetime due to their limited range and secretive nature.
They grow to approximately 70 centimetres and are greyish-brown in colour with darker markings. These reptiles feed primarily on other reptiles, particularly common lizards and slow worms. They’re constrictors, meaning they wrap coils around their prey to subdue it rather than using venom. For climbing trees or moving through narrow burrows, they use concertina movement, alternately bunching and extending their body like an accordion. The reptile anchors one part of its body whilst extending the other part forward, then pulls the rear section up to meet it.
On smooth surfaces like sand, some species use sidewinding, lifting loops of their body and setting them down at an angle to the direction of travel. This creates distinctive J-shaped tracks in the sand and allows efficient movement across surfaces where there’s nothing to push against.
Large, heavy species sometimes use rectilinear movement, travelling in a straight line by lifting and advancing sections of their belly scales, whilst others remain in contact with the ground. This slow but powerful method allows heavy-bodied reptiles to move through tight spaces.
Feeding and Digestion
All species are carnivorous, feeding on other animals. Their prey varies tremendously by species and size. Tiny thread varieties eat ant larvae and termites, whilst large pythons can consume animals as large as deer or pigs.
They cannot chew their food. Their jaw structure allows them to open their mouth extremely wide and swallow prey whole. The two halves of the lower jaw aren’t fused together like ours; instead, they connect via an elastic ligament, allowing them to stretch apart. Additionally, the upper and lower jaws can move independently, “walking” over prey to gradually engulf it.
The digestive process is slow and energy-intensive. After consuming a large meal, an individual may not eat again for weeks or even months. During digestion, they become sluggish and vulnerable, often seeking safe hiding places. Their metabolism increases dramatically, and their stomach produces extremely strong acids and enzymes capable of dissolving bones, teeth and even horns.
Shedding Skin: The Process of Ecdysis
These reptiles must periodically shed their skin as they grow, a process called ecdysis. Unlike mammals that shed individual cells continuously, they shed their entire outer skin layer in one piece.
Several days before shedding, their eyes become cloudy and opaque as fluid builds up between the old and new skin layers. During this period, they can barely see and often refuse food, becoming more defensive or hiding. Once the fluid is reabsorbed and vision clears, they’re ready to shed.
The animal rubs its snout against rough surfaces, creating a tear in the old skin around the lips. It then crawls forward, turning the old skin inside out as it peels away, much like a tight sock rolling off. The entire process can take several hours.
Young, rapidly growing individuals may shed every few weeks, whilst adults typically shed 2-4 times per year. The shed skin is translucent and paper-thin, revealing the scale pattern and even the eye caps.
Snake Habitats Around the World
These reptiles inhabit nearly every environment on Earth, from tropical rainforests to deserts, from sea level to mountains over 4,000 metres high. They’re absent only from Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland and New Zealand.
Tropical rainforests host the greatest diversity. Warm, humid conditions and abundant prey make these ideal habitats. Many rainforest species are arboreal (tree-dwelling) with prehensile tails for gripping branches. The emerald tree boa’s bright green colour provides camouflage amongst leaves, whilst heat-sensing pits help locate prey in the dense canopy.
Desert environments present extreme challenges with scorching days and freezing nights. Desert species are often nocturnal, sheltering in burrows during daytime heat. The sidewinder rattlesnake uses specialised movement across loose sand, with horned scales above its eyes preventing sand entry whilst buried.
Numerous species have adapted to aquatic life. Sea varieties spend entire lives in tropical oceans, with paddle-shaped tails for swimming and the ability to absorb oxygen through their skin whilst submerged. Freshwater species like anacondas hunt fish, amphibians and aquatic mammals in rivers and wetlands.
Snake Myths and Misconceptions

Many beliefs about these reptiles are scientifically incorrect, often stemming from fear, cultural stories or misunderstood behaviour. Addressing these misconceptions helps children develop an accurate understanding and respect.
Myth: Snakes Are Slimy
This is perhaps the most common misconception among children. Their skin is completely dry, composed of scales made from keratin. The smooth, cool texture can feel unfamiliar to those accustomed to furry or feathered animals, but there’s nothing slimy about it. The confusion may arise because they’re often found in damp environments, like near ponds or under logs, where moisture is present.
Myth: All Snakes Are Dangerous
Of approximately 3,800 species worldwide, only about 600 possess venom, and fewer than 200 of those have venom capable of seriously harming humans. The vast majority are completely harmless. Even venomous species typically use their venom for hunting prey, not defence. Most bites occur when people accidentally step on them or deliberately try to handle or kill them.
In the UK specifically, only one species (the adder) is venomous, and serious complications from adder bites are extraordinarily rare with modern medical care.

These reptiles do not chase humans. When one appears to be moving toward a person, it’s almost always trying to reach safety (a nearby burrow, rock pile or water) that happens to be in the person’s direction. They have poor distance vision and may not even recognise the human as a potential threat until they’re quite close.
Some species, like the black mamba, have a reputation for aggression, but this stems from their defensive behaviour when cornered. Given any escape route, even supposedly “aggressive” species will flee rather than confront a human.
Myth: Snakes Hypnotise Their Prey
The fixed, unblinking stare can appear hypnotic, but it doesn’t possess any ability to hypnotise animals. They lack eyelids and cannot blink, so their eyes always appear wide open and staring. Some prey animals freeze in fear when confronted by a predator, which may resemble hypnosis, but this is a prey response, not any special power.
Myth: You Can Tell a Venomous Snake by Its Head Shape
Many people believe triangular-headed species are venomous, whilst round-headed ones are harmless. This is unreliable and potentially dangerous. Whilst many viper species (including UK adders) do have broad, triangular heads, many harmless species can flatten their heads when threatened, making them appear triangular. Conversely, some highly venomous species, such as coral snakes and mambas, have narrow heads.
The only safe approach is to learn to identify specific species in your region and to treat all of them with respect and caution.
