We have ancient Greek texts describing musical theory, scales, and modes, and we possess instruments from archaeological sites, but we cannot definitively know how ancient music sounded because there was no adequate system to record it. The ancient Greeks did develop a form of notation using letters to indicate pitches, but this system was apparently little used and poorly understood even in antiquity, leaving us with only fragments and educated guesses about ancient musical practices.
The oral tradition possessed both strengths and limitations. On one hand, it kept music intimately connected to living performance and allowed for tremendous flexibility and personalisation. Each performance was unique, shaped by the performer’s skill, the audience’s response, and the demands of the moment.

Early neumes indicated whether the melody moved upward or downward and provided rough suggestions about phrasing and the number of notes per syllable, but they couldn’t specify exact pitches or precise rhythms. A monk who already knew a chant from oral tradition could use neumes as reminders of the melodic contour, but someone unfamiliar with the piece couldn’t learn it from neumes alone.
Different regions developed distinct neumatic styles. The St. Gall notation from Switzerland used a variety of elegant, calligraphic symbols with added letters and marks (episemas) to indicate performance nuances such as lengthening notes or singing more softly. The staff solved the fundamental problem of pitch specification that had plagued earlier notation, making it possible to write down music that could be performed accurately by any trained musician.

Musical education became more systematic and accessible. Collections of music could be compiled, preserved, and distributed.
