Making a promise requires you to think carefully about your time, responsibilities, and limitations and succeed in keeping your promises. A promise breaker understands the frustration or disappointment that can occur when a promise is not kept.
We find that a large part of our motivation to keep our promises comes from the fact that no one feels any negative consequences when we break our promises. Promises are one of the oldest human psychological mechanisms that promote cooperation and trust.
Here we study the neural basis of promise keeping and breaking. Subjects first make a naming decision (naming phase), then anticipate whether the naming will affect the interaction partner’s decision (prediction phase), then are free to fulfill or break the promise (decision phase).
The results showed that breaking promises was associated with increased activation of DLPFC, ACC, and amygdala, suggesting that dishonest behavior is accompanied by emotional conflict due to inhibition of honest responses.
Additionally, promise violations can be predicted by erroneous brain activity (frontal, ACC, inferior prefrontal) patterns during promises and expectations, suggesting that brain measurements can detect malicious intent before dishonest or deceptive behaviors are actually executed.
We hypothesized three possible outcome patterns. The first is custody disputes. A breach of promise may occur primarily with the intention to act in good faith. This means that all mouse trajectories associated with breaking the promise are sharply curved.
